Wood smoke leaves creosote on the inside of the flue every time you light a fire. First it is dust, then flakes, then a glossy glaze that is essentially fuel stuck to the chimney wall. A sweep takes it out before it gets to that stage.

Creosote is what chimney fires burn. The NFPA 211 standard calls for an annual inspection of every chimney in use and a sweep whenever buildup is found. In the Hill Country most fireplaces that burn a few dozen evenings a winter need a sweep every year or two.

It has been a year since the last sweep or inspection

Smoke comes back into the room when the fire is lit

A shiny black glaze or crunchy flakes on the flue walls

A campfire smell in the house on humid days or when the AC runs

Soot falling into the firebox or on the smoke shelf

Birds, nests or leaves visible in the flue or on the damper

Frequently Asked
Questions About
Chimney Sweep

How often should a chimney be swept?

Inspected every year, swept whenever there is buildup. A fireplace used a few dozen evenings a winter usually needs a sweep every year or two. One that burns most nights needs it every year.

What is creosote and why does it matter?

It is condensed wood smoke: dust first, then flakes, then a hard glaze. The glaze is what chimney fires burn, and it is the reason the sweep exists.

Is chimney sweeping messy?

No. We cover the hearth, seal the firebox opening and run a HEPA vacuum the whole time. The room looks the same when we leave.

Do you inspect before sweeping?

Yes. Every sweep starts with a free inspection and photos. If the flue is clean, we tell you and you owe nothing.

How long does it take?

One to two hours for a typical masonry fireplace, less for a prefab unit.

When is the best time to book?

September or early October. The week the first cold front hits, every chimney company in Central Texas is booked out.
