Burner, pilot, logs, glass and venting cleaned and tested once a year, so the fireplace lights on the first cold evening instead of smelling odd or not lighting at all.

Gas fireplaces get skipped because there is no wood and no soot. But the burner collects dust and spider webs all summer, the logs shift, the pilot assembly corrodes, and the vent fills with debris. The result is a fireplace that will not light in November, or lights with a whoomp and a smell.

A gas fireplace burns cleanly only when the burner ports are clear, the logs sit where the manufacturer put them and the vent is open. Dust, pet hair and spider webs take a summer to undo that. The service takes about an hour and is the difference between a fireplace that works on the first cold evening and one that does not.

Will not light, or the pilot will not stay lit

Delayed ignition, the whoomp, when it does light

A smell that lasts longer than the first minute

Soot on the glass or on the logs

White film on the glass that does not wipe off

It has been a year since anyone looked at it

Frequently Asked
Questions About
Gas Fireplace Service

My gas fireplace will not light. What is usually wrong?

A dirty pilot or a failed thermocouple most of the time. Both are part of the annual service.

What is the whoomp when it lights?

Delayed ignition: gas pools before it lights because the burner ports are clogged. It is a safety issue and the service fixes it.

Is the smell on first use normal?

Dust burning off for a minute is normal. A smell that persists is not, and the fireplace should be looked at.

Do you service vent-free units too?

Yes, and we are strict about the manufacturer clearances and the oxygen sensor on those.

When should I book?

Late summer or early fall, before the first cold front. We service gas and wood fireplaces on the same visit if you have both.
